A ‘What’s Your Perfect Gift’ quiz to minimise waste has been launched in Ireland as part of ongoing efforts to encourage people to shop local.

The Christmas quiz from fintech Miconex offers players the chance to win a £100 Town & City Gift Card for their choice of 4 local Town & City Gift Card programmes in Ireland; the Lakes Gift Card, the Drogheda Gift Card, the Carndonagh Gift Card and the High Street Ashbourne Gift Card.

How does the Quiz work?

The ‘What’s Your Perfect Gift’ quiz helps users to figure out which present they would most like to receive for Christmas by answering five festive questions, including their favourite Christmas movie, favourite holiday food, and the present they asked Santa for as a child.

Answers to the quiz questions reveal the ideal present to suit the player’s personality in one of six possible categories: food and drink, shopping, leisure and attractions, health and beauty, services, and accommodation. Each category represents a type of business where consumers can spend their local Town & City Gift Card. Players can then share their ideal present with friends and family.

“The concept of the ‘What’s Your Perfect Gift’ Christmas quiz is to encourage people to think locally with their Christmas shopping, supporting local towns and cities, whilst also making sure they get a present they’d really like and can make use of,” said managing director of Miconex Colin Munro.

He also said that the Gift Card and Voucher Association has found that 1 in 5 Christmas gifts end up in landfill with people receiving an average of two unwanted Christmas gifts each year.

These Irish Town & City Gift Card programmes have cards made from paper rather than plastic and offer an eco-friendlier alternative to traditional plastic gift cards. Town & City Gift Cards can also be spent on experiences as well as products and provide essential support for many types of businesses.

The Lakes Gift Card launched in 2020 and can be spent with around 100 businesses in Ballinrobe, Cong and Clonbur. Over £254,000 of the Lakes Gift Cards have been sold, with over £190,000 of that already redeemed with local businesses.

Joanne Hynes, owner of Joanne Hynes Total Health Pharmacy in Ballinrobe, County Mayo said:

“Total Health is a local pharmacy in Ballinrobe, I grew up in the town and my viewpoint is that if I don’t go into the local shops they might close, and how would I feel then. I strongly believe that we all need to take responsibility to support small businesses because if we don’t, they close their doors. We need to support each other. With the Lakes Gift Card, people are not obliged to spend it at a certain place, and they can use it on their regular groceries, day to day essentials like petrol or on a little treat for themselves.

The Drogheda Gift Card launched in 2020 and can be spent with over 170 businesses in Drogheda. Over £110,000 of Drogheda Gift Cards have been sold since 2020.

“The Crafty Fox has been in business for over 10 years now and offers everything from top quality designer fabrics to budget-friendly pieces of cotton and everything you need for a range of crafts, including sewing, quilting, knitting, felting, macramé and embroidery. We have a range of craft kits that make great Christmas gifts, and we also offer craft classes and workshops in everything from crochet and quilting to Christmas crafts and needle felting.

Jackie Jolliffe, owner of The Crafty Fox

“As soon as I heard about the Drogheda Gift Card I thought it was a brilliant idea for keeping money in the locality. It’s an excellent scheme for businesses to be a part of because there are no costs involved. The better the town looks, and the more vibrant businesses we have, the more attractive the area becomes, and that is beneficial to everyone that lives, works and operates in Drogheda”, said Jackie Jolliffe, owner of The Crafty Fox on Laurence Street in Drogheda

Damien Coleman, manager of Joyce’s in Inishowen, a traditional bar with lounge and guest rooms said:

“Joyce’s is located in the Diamond of Carndonagh and makes the ideal base for exploring Inishowen and the Wild Atlantic Way along with the Inishowen 100, a stunning 100-mile driving route along the coast. Inishowen is like a mini Ireland and has everything to offer, from lakes and cliffs to beaches and lively towns. We joined the Carndonagh Gift Card because anything we can do to support locals, we have to do. It keeps money here in Carndonagh.

“When a person is given a Carndonagh Gift Card, they can use it for a stay at Joyce’s, as well as many other businesses in town. Sister property to the 4* Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa, Joyce’s has a beautiful bar and lounge area, an outdoor courtyard to give the holiday atmosphere, and 8 new guest rooms. Joyce’s rivals any 4* hotel in the area but more than the facilities, people come to Joyce’s for the authentic Irish experience, for the live music, a wee Guinness and a game of pool or darts in the lounge and for the events like Octoberfest and Christmas.”
