Two men die in Co Mayo crash

Two men, aged 43 and 47, have died following a two-car collision in Co Mayo in the early hours of this morning.

The crash happened at Ballynahaglish, a short distance from Ballina, just before 5am.

They were the only occupants of the cars and both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their bodies have been taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar, where post mortem examinations are due to be carried out.

Gardaí have closed a section of the N26 where the crash happened and local diversions are in place.

They have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

The men are the first people to lose their lives on the roads in 2014.
