Two held over fatal shooting in Dublin

Gardaí are questioning a man and a woman in connection with the murder of a grandfather in Dublin yesterday evening.

Edward O’Connor, 41, from Barn Lodge in Finglas, died after he was shot several times on the Ballycoolin Road in Finglas.

Gardaí believe the killing is connected to a dispute in a pub in the area over the weekend.

The two people in custody can be detained for up to a week.

Mr O’Connor was shot just after 5pm. He was taken to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, but pronounced dead there a short time later.

Gardai have begun a murder investigation. They believe the killing is connected to a fight in a pub during which a relative of the victim was seriously injured.

Groups from opposite sides are thought to have arranged to meet up for a fight at the Ballycoolin Road yesterday evening, but a gun was produced and Mr O’Connor was shot.

Detectives are now trying to identify and interview everyone who was at the scene at the time.

The scene of the shooting remains sealed off this morning.

The Ballycoolin Road from the Premier Business Park to the Cappage Road is closed to traffic.
