Two people have died following a fire in Gort, Co Galway overnight.

The fire broke out at a flat at Tom O’Donnell flats in the centre of Gort, some time after 2am.

Four units of the fire brigade attended the scene. 

Fire service personnel from Gort and Loughrea spent over three hours bringing the blaze under control.

The bodies of two people were recovered from the building. One is that of a 38-year-old man. The second body has not yet been identified, but is believed to be that of a woman in her 60s.

It is understood no one else was in the house at the time.

The property has been sealed off and a technical examination of the scene will be carried out this morning.
