Supervalu’s market share was boosted by the recent rebranding of Superquinn stores
Supervalu has become the second biggest grocer in Ireland, according to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel, following the rebranding of Superquinn stores.
In the 12 weeks to 2 March, Supervalu accounted for 25.3% of the total take home grocery spend in the country – unchanged from the combined share of Supervalu and Superquinn in the same period of 2013.
This put the retailer second to British chain Tesco, which had a share of 26.4% in the 12-week period; down 4.9% on a year ago.
Dunnes Stores also saw its share fall, down 4.7% to 22.4% in the 12 weeks to the start of March.
Meanwhile the country’s two main discount chains – Aldi and Lidl – have both seen another considerable rise in market share.
In the 12-week period recorded, Aldi accounted for 7.5% of total spend – up 22.8% on last year – while Lidl accounted for 7% – up 11.6%.
Overall, grocery spend during the 12 weeks was down 0.6% when compared to the same period of 2013, the weakest performance in the market since September 2011.
