A post-mortem examination will be carried out today at Galway University Hospital on the body of the three-year-old boy who died in a lift shaft in Galway yesterday afternoon.

He has been named locally as Solomon Soremekun, who lived with his parents and three sisters on the outskirts of Galway city.

Both of his parents are originally from Nigeria. It is understood the family recently moved to Galway but has been resident in Ireland for some time.

The scene where he died has been preserved, pending further investigations today.

The boy was in the Hynes Building on Augustine Street with his mother and siblings when he became separated from them and found his way into the lift shaft of the three-storey building.

The family had been visiting the Social Welfare office on the first floor of the building.
