A 28-year-old man has been found not guilty by reason of insanity of the murder of his mother.
Paul Henry had denied the murder of Ann Henry at The Spinney, Abbeytown, Roscommon in September 2011.
He lived in the house at the time of the killing.
A jury at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Castlebar returned a majority verdict.
The jury of six men and six women deliberated for just over three hours, after retiring to consider the evidence this afternoon.
Mr Justice Paul Carney told them he would accept a majority verdict when they returned with a question after around three hours of deliberations.
Mr Henry has been detained at the Central Mental Hospital since his arrest after the death of his mother.
He will be back before the court in Castlebar next week, when a report from the Central Mental Hospital will be furnished.
