A man has been charged with the murder of a 62-year-old man in Dublin at the weekend.

Cathal Sweeney died after he was attacked in a flat at Ashdale Gardens in the Terenure area of the city on Saturday night.

He had spent the day socialising and watching the Ireland-Wales rugby match with a number of other men when a row broke out.

Mr Sweeney was hit and suffered head injuries after a fall.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics, but died a short time later in St James’s Hospital.

A man in his 30s who was arrested at the scene was questioned throughout Sunday about the attack.

Following consultations with the Director of Public Prosecutions, gardaí charged him with murder.

He is due to appear before the Dublin District Court this morning
