A murder investigation is under way after a woman in her 20s was stabbed in a shop in Kilkenny city centre yesterday evening.

The woman was at work in the Holland and Barrett shop at the Market Cross Shopping centre shortly after 8.30pm when a man came into the shop and stabbed her a number of times.

It is believed the woman knew her attacker.

Gardaí and the emergency services were called to the scene and the woman was brought to St Luke’s Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out today.

A 27-year-old man was arrested a short time later and is being questioned at Kilkenny Garda Station.
