Man behind ‘great Canadian maple syrup heist’ ordered to pay US$7 million fine

The man behind a decade-old maple syrup theft, the subject of an episode of Netflix’s Dirty Money show, will have to pay C$9 million (US$7.2 million) in fines, Canada’s top court said on Thursday, upholding an earlier ruling by a lower court. A group of people in the province of Quebec siphoned off maple syrup worth over C$18 million from a reservoir and replaced it with water, before authorities discovered the crime in 2012, in what has been dubbed the “great Canadian maple syrup heist”…
