The Olympic Council of Ireland has announced that 21-year-old downhill skier Conor Lyne will be Ireland’s flag bearer at the Parade of Nations during the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
The Parade of Nations will be held at the Olympic Stadium on Friday, 7 February as over 80 nations will participate in the Ceremony.
Lyne will represent Ireland in the slalom and grand slalom, which starts on Wednesday 19 February.
Ireland’s first competitor in action at the Sochi Games is 16-year-old snowboader Seamus O’Connor, who will take part in slopestyle qualification tomorrow morning.
Ireland have never won a Winter Olympic medal but came close in 2002 when Clifton Wrottesley finished fourth in the men’s skeleton in Salt Lake City.
