Haass talks end without agreement

Negotiations on resolving problem areas in Northern Ireland’s peace process, chaired by former US diplomat Richard Haass, suspended for Christmas

Negotiations on resolving problem areas in Northern Ireland’s peace process, chaired by former US diplomat Richard Haass, have been suspended for Christmas.

Just before 4 o’clock this morning, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams tweeted news of the suspension.

He added that “good progress” had been made but expressed disappointment that an agreement could not be reached.

It had been hoped an agreement could be reached before Christmas on three contentious issues: flags and emblems, parades and how to address the past.

The talks are to resume on 27 December.
