ECB keeps euro zone rates on hold at 0.25%

The European Central Bank held its key interest rates steady as expected at its rates meeting in Frankfurt today.

The ECB left its central “refi” or refinancing rate unchanged at 0.25%.

The central bank also held its other two key rates – the marginal lending rate and the deposit rate – unchanged at 0.75% and 0% respectively.

Analysts had not expected any change in rates at the first meeting this year of the central bank’s decision-making governing council after a surprise quarter-point rate cut in November.

ECB President Mario Draghi was scheduled to explain the reasoning behind the latest decision at a news conference afterwards.

Investors will be listening out for any hints about the ECB’s next moves after euro zone inflation dipped to 0.8% in December from 0.9% in November. This is well below the ECB’s target of just below 2%.
