The Agile-Lean Conference returns this April and we spoke to co-organiser David Denham to find out what people can expect from this year’s event.
When and where is it on?
20th & 21st April 2020 at Croke Park, Dublin
How many years has it been running?
This is our 4th year running the Agile-Lean Ireland conference. We’ve been amazed by the interest and support of our past 3 events, which grew from 150 delegates in 2017, to 525 in 2018, to 750 in 2019 (and a 2nd day). The standard of speakers was extremely high last year and included keynotes from the brilliant Barry O’Reilly, Dan North and Mary Poppendieck.
We’ve been running meetups as a community for almost 5 years now, and we’re really excited about making our 2020 event even better. ALI is an absolutely thriving and diverse community these days, and we’re immensely proud of the journey we’ve been on with it. This year is going to be even bigger and better.
What was the inspiration to start it?
We are simply a group of friends who started this because we are passionate about Lean and Agile, and wanted to contribute to creating a vibrant Agile-Lean community in Ireland. It started as a crazy experiment, off the back of a talk myself and my friend Rob gave at the Agile Tour at the time – the Agile community in Dublin was very small at the time.
We came up with a “definition of awesome” – which was simply that if anyone showed up for that meetup, it would be a success! With another friend’s borrowed projector, and driving a couple of hours to pick up a screen, we were ready to go! It just took off from there, and thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the support of the community, we now have almost 2,500 members in ALI.
What exciting things can people look forward to this year?
Our 2020 event is going to be amazing – we can’t say how excited we are to have the cream of the crop of international and Irish speakers with us. For example, we have Lyssa Adkins as our opening keynote speaker. Lyssa wrote the book “Coaching Agile Teams”, which is the go-to-guide for thousands of Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters around the world.
Our other keynotes include Dave Snowden and Daniel Vacanti, who are leaders in their fields of Leadership & Complexity, and Agile & Lean Metrics. We don’t believe there is a better lineup at any other conference in the world in 2020. Most importantly, this is a chance to meet other like-minded people and share knowledge and experiences, and have some fun! We will have dedicated tracks on Agile Testing, Product Management, Development, Agile Coaching, Agile HR & Recruiting, Kanban, Teams, Leadership and more!
What opportunities are on offer for people / startups / investors/ companies attending?
ALI has been named once again in the Top 20 Agile Conferences in the world by TechBeacon.com, and for good reason. The feedback we always hear from attendees is they get access to speak to great speakers, network with peers, learn from the very best in the world and Ireland, and in a vibrant atmosphere to boot. For anybody looking to attend or support us with sponsorship, we believe ALI provides huge opportunities to learn and grow.
What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?
Take your team and bring a notebook! This is an amazing opportunity to learn from the masters of Lean and Agile. Our event is run by the community for the community, and your 2-day learnings from the best in the business will come at a fraction of the cost of other events around Europe. We’ll have a variety of regular talks, workshops, lightning talks and networking sessions, so it’s a great opportunity to learn lots of different topics in different and hands-on ways. In addition to this, we have workshops taking place the days after the conference, so this is a way to double your learnings – these include sessions on Women in Agile, Liberating Structures, Agile HR and Agile Leadership.
How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?
We have sold out every year for the past 3 years, and tickets are selling fast this year again. We encourage you to get yours now through our website – www.agileleanireland.org.
