24-year-old Irishman dies in India

A 24-year-old Irishman has died in India. The man was found unconscious in a budget hotel room in a suburb of Mumbai and rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Brendan Devenney was discovered by hotel staff in his room in the hotel in Sahar on Tuesday, a day after he landed at Mumbai airport.

It is understood the young man was planning to travel to Goa.

Sahar police are awaiting the post-mortem report to establish the exact cause of death.

“It is too early to conclude whether there was any foul play. A probe will be initiated after the post-mortem,” said Sahar senior police inspector Prashant Mardhe.

“An FIR will be registered if the post-mortem report shows the cause of death due to some other factor besides natural,” he added.

Police are recording statements of the hotel staff and have already informed the young man’s parents of his death.
